From choosing the smoothing system to compliance, packaging, pricing and salon education — the full path to a private label Brazilian keratin line.

Brazilian keratin is one of the few professional categories where country of origin still carries commercial weight. Salons and distributors expect it to be made in Brazil, and buyers ask where it was produced. That makes it a strong first category for a new professional brand — provided the smoothing system, the compliance path and the education material are decided in the right order.

Step 1: decide which smoothing system you are selling

"Brazilian keratin" is a market label, not a single chemistry. What sits behind it determines your claims, your regulatory path and which markets you can enter.

SystemTypical positioningRegulatory note
Formaldehyde-free acid systemsProfessional smoothing, salon serviceRequired for the EU and most regulated markets
Glyoxylic-free alternativesSensitive scalp, low-odour salonsGrowing demand in the EU
Protein and amino acid treatmentsFrizz control and alignment, not full straighteningBroadest market access
Home-care maintenanceRetail add-on after the salon serviceRetail labelling rules apply

The single most common launch mistake is choosing a domestic Brazilian formula and only later discovering it cannot be notified in the destination market. Specify the destination market on the first email you send a manufacturer.

Step 2: build the line, not one product

A single smoothing bottle is hard to sell to a salon. A three-step service kit with a retail maintenance pair is a repeatable business. A workable first line looks like this:

  • Clarifying or deep-cleansing preparation step.
  • The smoothing active itself, in professional volume.
  • Post-service sealing mask or protein reconstruction step.
  • Retail maintenance shampoo and conditioner, sulphate-free, for home use.

At 300 litres per SKU you can build that full line at a realistic first investment instead of gambling everything on one product. See how the models work on our Brazilian keratin private label page.

Step 3: choose full service or bulk

Full service delivers retail-ready branded units and is almost always right for a first launch — you have no filling risk and the manufacturer carries labelling responsibility. Bulk supply becomes attractive later, when volume justifies local filling. The economics are broken down in bulk hair cosmetics supply.

Step 4: get the compliance path started early

Compliance follows the market where the product is sold. For the EU you need a Responsible Person, a Product Information File and a CPNP notification. In the US, MoCRA requires facility registration and product listing. Gulf markets generally need local registration and a certificate of free sale. Run this in parallel with sampling, not after production.

Step 5: packaging that survives an acid system

Smoothing actives are acid systems and they interact with packaging. Bottle resin, cap liner and pump components all need compatibility testing with the actual formula, stored under accelerated conditions. Choosing packaging on aesthetics alone and testing afterwards is the most expensive shortcut in this category.

Step 6: price for the salon, not for the shelf

Professional buyers evaluate cost per service, not cost per bottle. Work out how many services a litre delivers at the recommended application weight, then position against what the salon charges. A slightly higher bottle price with a lower cost per service usually wins the account.

Step 7: sell the protocol, not just the product

Smoothing results depend on technique: dilution, processing time, iron temperature and number of passes. Brands that ship a written protocol, a short training video and a troubleshooting sheet see far fewer complaints and much higher reorder rates. Ask your manufacturer for the technical parameters behind each formula and turn them into salon-facing material.

Can Brazilian keratin be sold in the European Union?

Yes, using formaldehyde-free systems formulated against Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, with an EU Responsible Person and a CPNP notification. Domestic Brazilian formulas are not automatically EU-compliant.

What is the minimum order to start a keratin brand?

300 litres per SKU with us, in either finished goods or bulk drums, which lets you launch a multi-step line rather than a single product.

How long does the first production run take?

After the formula and artwork are approved, production and quality control run to a defined schedule; the variable parts are usually packaging supply and destination-market registration.
