Short answer

Private label manufacturing is when a factory produces a product that is sold under your brand rather than its own. You own the brand, the label and the commercial relationship with the customer; the manufacturer owns the production, and usually the formula unless you commissioned an exclusive one.

Key takeaways
  • Private label describes the commercial outcome: your brand on someone else's production line.
  • OEM means you bring the specification; ODM means the factory brings the formula.
  • White label is a shared base sold to several brands; private label is usually adjusted for you.
  • Most of a first order's cost is packaging, artwork, testing and registration, not the formula.
  • Choose on formulation capability, minimums and export documentation before price.

What is private label manufacturing?

Private label manufacturing is an arrangement in which a manufacturer produces goods that carry your brand. The factory runs the batch, fills and packs it with your artwork, and ships it to you or your distributor. Nothing on the pack identifies the producer beyond the legally required manufacturing information.

In hair cosmetics this is the normal route to market. Building a compliant production site for shampoos, masks and professional treatments costs millions and takes years; renting proven capacity costs a first production run.

How is it different from OEM, ODM and white label?

ModelWho owns the formulaIdeal para
Private labelUsually the factory, adjusted for youLaunching a branded range quickly
Etiqueta BlancaThe factory, shared with other brandsTesting a market at lowest cost
OEMYou, or your specificationBrands with an existing proven formula
ODMThe factory develops it for youBrands with a market but no lab
Exclusive developmentYou, by contractHero products worth protecting

Real projects mix them. A typical launch uses a catalogue base for two supporting SKUs and an exclusive development for the hero treatment, all produced under one agreement. The comparison in practice is covered in productos capilares de marca blanca.

What does a private label project actually cost?

Brands routinely overestimate the formula and underestimate everything around it. On a first order, the bulk liquid is rarely the largest line.

  1. Packaging: bottles, caps, pumps, cartons — usually the biggest single cost.
  2. Artwork and print setup, charged per SKU regardless of volume.
  3. Pruebas de estabilidad y compatibilidad con el envase.
  4. Registro o notificación regulatoria en el mercado de destino.
  5. Formula cost per litre.
  6. Freight, insurance, duty and clearance.

Because four of those six lines are fixed per SKU, producing below a factory's minimum increases your cost per unit rather than reducing it. That is why minimums exist, and why they are quoted in litres — ours is 300 litres per SKU.

How do you choose the right private label manufacturer?

  • In-house R&D: can they change the formula, or only resell a base?
  • Category fit: professional smoothing and reconstruction are specialised chemistry.
  • Minimums you can actually fund across a range, not one SKU.
  • Export documentation for your exact destination market.
  • A sample batch before the production run, tested on your market's hair types.
  • A written lead time, with the packaging supply step named separately.

The deeper due-diligence checklist, including what to verify on a factory audit or a video walkthrough, is in how to evaluate a Brazilian cosmetics manufacturer.

How long does a private label launch take?

Eight to sixteen weeks from brief to goods ready to ship is realistic for a first range. Formulation is rarely the constraint; packaging supply and market registration usually are. The stage-by-stage schedule is set out in our project timeline.

Do I own the formula in private label manufacturing?

Not by default. Catalogue and adjusted bases stay with the manufacturer. Ownership or exclusivity of a custom development is possible, but it must be agreed in writing before development starts.

Is private label the same as white label?

No. White label is a ready base sold to several brands with different labels. Private label normally involves adjustment — fragrance, texture, actives or claims — so the product is specific to you.

What is the minimum order for private label hair care?

At Eco Beauty, 300 litres per SKU, as finished branded goods or as bulk drums for local filling.

Can I start without an existing brand?

Yes. Many first projects begin with a category decision and a target market, and the brand, pack and claims are built alongside the formulation.

Who is legally responsible for the product?

The brand placing the product on the market is normally responsible in the destination country, supported by the manufacturer's technical dossier. In the EU this is the designated responsible person.
